Founded in 1962 and established as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 1997, the AHIMA Foundation envisions a future where health information serves people and where better health outcomes are powered by health information for all. We believe that Health information is a force for greater good and we have a responsibility to unlock this potential for public benefit.
We are passionate about empowering consumers and communities to be engaged and activated participants in their everyday health and wellness journey, using trusted health information from traditional and emerging sources.
We do this through programs that build awareness, advocate for consumers around the access, use and protection of their health information in traditional and non-traditional health settings, help consumers understand and use their health information, and address the challenge of disparate information by helping consumers aggregate and share their comprehensive health information as they see fit. The AHIMA Foundation also conducts research that supports its consumer-focused agenda and continues its support of health information professionals through educational and leadership supports.
While the Foundation has been in existence for some time, the organization recently established its new consumer focused strategy and programmatic agenda as a key part of organization transformation efforts within the AHIMA enterprise which constitutes a 501(c) (6) parent organization and its wholly owned 501(c) (3), the AHIMA Foundation.
