Social Media Specialist Summary: The Social Media Specialist at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) is responsible for contributing to the planning, development and implementation of WVSOM’s social media platforms in order to support and improve online presence and overall digital marketing efforts for the school. The individual will serve as an administrator of WVSOM’s social media accounts and will be responsible for working with campus personnel on content development, posting, monitoring and reporting on identified platforms including analytics. The Social Media Specialist will also assist with marketing and communications efforts including multimedia and written stories, social media and web content, recruitment materials, photography and other related duties as needed. This position reports to the Graphic Designer/Social Media Strategist.
General Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with the development, implementation and management of WVSOM’s social media content.
Create original written and visual content which includes photography and video that aligns with WVSOM’s marketing and communications strategy to be used across WVSOM’s main social media channels, WVSOM website and other digital platforms as needed. Serve as a consultant to other departments for secondary channels.
Execute the day-to-day responsibilities of WVSOM’s social media accounts, including crafting and posting compelling content for all users, maintaining a social media content calendar, monitoring and responding to comments and interactions, and sharing incoming messages with essential colleagues.
Assist with the creation and maintenance of the content calendar and strategy for campaigns – working with the team to decide what services or other departments will be needed to complete the campaign.
Post daily content including photos, graphics, and videos across multiple social media platforms.
Actively monitor, collect, and engage with followers on different channels through monitoring comments, direct messages and tagged photos.
Work in multidisciplinary teams including writers, photographers and graphic designers.
Monitor new trends in social media for potential ideas.
Attend campus events as assigned and gather or take video and photographs for social media promotion.
Other related duties as directed or assigned.
Position: This is a full-time, non-classified position; it is exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime.Many activities of this position occur outside the confines of an 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. schedule and may require evening and weekend scheduling as needed. The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and the institution.
This position has been designated as essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM.

Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Social Media, Communications, Public Relations, or related field, with three years’ experience in social media or related. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may also be considered.
Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor in any communication capacity (written or verbal), along with excellent communication skills, including the ability to build trusted, collaborative relationships with internal clients and with vendors.
Ability to work independently, producing reliable, high-quality content with minimal supervision or editing. At the same time, the individual must be capable of working collaboratively on projects and engaging with other WVSOM employees.
Excellent writing, grammar and copyediting skills, with specific interest and experience in writing for social media using relevant conventions and voice.
Experience in multimedia asset creation and editing that includes photo and video as demonstrated in a digital portfolio.
Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
Strong ability to multi-task multiple projects at the same time.
Excellent attention to detail, flexible and adaptable to change.
Ability to work outside of standard work hours on a regular basis.
