The Director of the Highlander Union Building (HUB) is responsible for the direct management and fiscal oversight of the HUB. The HUB's mission is to enhance the educational, recreational and social experiences of the campus community. The HUB offers 160,000 square feet of programming, event, office, dining and outdoor spaces. This includes the facilities management of Costo Hall and the Student Success Center. The HUB Director will have direct oversight of the policies and procedures associated with managing the Highlander Union, including facilities, event policies, strategic planning, programming and capital projects. In addition to direct oversight of the Highlander Union, the incumbent will liaison with other critical campus departments including Student Affairs, Auxiliary Services, Facilities Services, Campus Safety, Risk Management, Environmental Health & Safety as well as the offices associated with the VC of Health, Well-Being and Safety. The HUB Director will also manage free speech and expressive activity in association with the Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs office.
- Provides oversight of HUB Administration, Facilities, Scheduling and Programming to support the campus community, including room reservations, program support and facilities management. Conduct assessment of the HUB department with an emphasis on developing new services, enhancing building operations and increasing student engagement opportunities. The Director is also responsible for supervising the Assistant Director of the HUB, reviewing of finances (operations, capital projects, reserves) and goal development. Serves on campus-wide and divisional committees. Formulates and enacts departmental strategic plan and vision that supports student growth, development, and service.
- Develops professional development plans for direct reports to ensure professional growth in the areas of event and administrative student union services. Active participant in national and regional associations.
- Write and review policies and procedures for building usage, including events. Develops policy related to the management of the HUB. Makes recommendations for campus-wide policy creation and revision, when appropriate in the areas of operations, finances, facilities, student services and vendor activities. Develops and approves service agreements/memorandum of understanding documents. Incorporates a culture of assessment in all aspects of operations to enhance HUB services and increase student engagement.
- In association with Facilities Services, develops best practices in facility management including maintenance and event service standards. Assess workforce needs in facilities and provides strategic directives regarding service improvements, capital planning and staffing. Works directly with HUB Facilities Manager, meeting regularly to ensure that the facility is operating effectively. Ensures building compliance with all applicable local, state, federal and University of California law related to operations.
- Serves as first-responder to student activism and protest in association with other VCSA Directors. Collaborates and initiates training programs on free speech for students and staff.
- Manages capital improvement projects for Highlander Union Building, Costo Hall and the Student Success Center. Includes budgetary, logistics, risk and safety oversight. Develop and assess plans for long-range space allocations and facility improvements. Includes recommendations on student amenities and expansion projects. Collaborate with campus stakeholders on university-wide projects in the areas of Informational Technology, Facilities Services and Marketing. Projects include shared campus systems, digital marketing expansion and facility enhancements.
- Includes analysis and development of fee schedules for events, room reservations, services and building usage.
- Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
- Serve as Student Affairs Liaison to the Highlander Union Governing Board: overseeing HUB operational policies and budget oversight. Provides guidance and advising of the HUB Governing Board Chair in the areas of meeting management, finances, policy and space allocation. Develops annual training program for all board members.
