The Director of Marketing and Audience Experience is a collaborative leader responsible for growing audiences, elevating the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra’s audience experience, and driving earned revenue across approximately 30 concerts and events annually. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role leads all marketing, communication, sales, and audience development/experience initiatives, ensuring alignment with the TSO’s artistic vision, core values and overall mission. This role offers the opportunity to shape the voice of a growing organization, expand audiences, and play a key role in the Tulsa’s cultural landscape. Success in this role will be measured by audience growth and retention, increased ticket revenue, and increased brand visibility and engagement.
This position oversees a full-time Marketing Administrative Assistant, full-time Box Office Manager, part-time Patron Services Associate, seasonal interns, and multiple sub-contractors (designers, photographers, and vendors).
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
DIRECT REPORTS: 2 FTEs and 1 PTE in marketing
CLOSE COLLABORATORS: Orchestra Manager, Director of Education & Community Engagement, Principal Librarian, and two Development Associates
HOURS:
- 35 hours regular work week, plus concerts and events
- Full time, exempt
- Requires on-site work every Tuesday-Friday, plus concerts and events. Work from home permitted on Mondays.
RESPONSIBILITES
Marketing Strategy & Revenue Generation
- Develop and implement annual, multi-channel marketing plans to achieve revenue and audience development goals across subscription and single-ticket campaigns
- Collaborate with the Executive Director on the departmental budget; manage and monitor approved budget and track goal progress
- Provide clear sales reporting for leadership and board review, including both revenue and audience data; bring proactive solutions for pacing challenges
- Lead strategies for subscription renewal, acquisition, retention, group sales and new audience development
- Use CRM data, analytics and segmentation to guide campaign targeting and patron journey mapping
Brand, Communications, and Public Relations
- Serve as the lead organizational voice for messaging, communications, media relations and narrative development, including social media
- Ensure all messaging aligns with TSO’s mission, vision and values
- Oversee PR strategy, include media outreach, press materials, interview prep, influencer partnerships, and outcomes tracking
- Act as or prepare spokespersons for the TSO, including the Executive Director and Principal or guest conductors as needed
- Serve as a visible representative of the TSO at concerts and events, adding to the audience experience
- Manage crisis communication planning in collaboration with the Executive Director and Board
- Maintain consistent institutional branding across all platforms and collateral
Digital Marketing & Content Strategy
- Oversee content creation and strategy across email, social media, website, and paid digital channels
- Monitor and interpret Google Analytics, social insights, and conversion data to optimize campaigns
- Direct production of marketing collateral, digital ads, video content, and photography in partnership with internal and external creatives
- Maintain and enhance website content, to include both in-house maintenance and work with outside vendors, ensuring a compelling customer experience
Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work closely with the development, artistic, and education/community engagement teams to align marketing with fundraising, artistic vision and community impact
- Partner with development on donor communications and patron stewardship strategies driven by audience insights
- Collaborate with education and artistic staff to promote engagement programs and broaden TSO’s reach
Operational & Administrative Leadership
- Manage workflows, timelines, and efficient departmental systems
- Use CRM/Ticketing Systems; become skilled in events management and reporting
- Oversee vendor relationships, contract negotiation, and advertising buys within TSO’s spending guidelines
- Lead program book management
- Oversee front-of-house marketing presence and lobby experience
- Attend concerts and events; ensure strong visual presence and audience experience at all TSO activities
Essential Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in arts marketing or related field
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
- Experience with CRM/ticketing systems
- Strong communicator with excellent writing, interpersonal, and presentation skills
- Data-driven mindset with the ability to interpret trends and respond in real time with flexibility
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and tasks, and meet deadlines
- Belief in the TSO’s mission and genuine enthusiasm for its work
- A positive, collegial attitude with a solutions-oriented mindset
- Availability for evening and weekend work, with the understanding that weekday in-office hours can be adjusted to offset weekend time
- A passion for and working knowledge of symphonic music
Strongly Preferred
- Demonstrated success in revenue-driven marketing campaigns
- Expertise in digital marketing: paid search, paid social, retargeting, SEO, and web optimization
- Strong content development skills and experience managing creative assets
- Project management excellence; ability to lead fast-paced, flexible workflows
- Budget management, forecasting, and contract negotiation
- Fluency with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, email platforms, and basic HTML
- Familiarity with audience segmentation and lifecycle marketing models
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Use of an office phone, computer and internet is required
- Must have a valid driver's license and own transportation
- This job will be based in Tulsa Symphony’s offices in Tulsa’s Arts District
- A cell phone and remote access to email and office files are required, as many tasks take place offsite
- Ability to carry materials and signage
